The Requirements For Earning Your CBAP Certification

Before you can qualify to sit for the CBAP exam, you’ll need to complete 7500 hours of experience as a working Business Analyst over a maximum time frame of 10 years and a minimum of five years, including at least 900 hours in each of 4 of the 6 BABOK knowledge areas (for a total of 3600 hours).

To put the numbers in perspective, 7500 hours over 10 years means you’d need to complete approximately 19 weeks of full time work every year as a Business Analyst, or approximately 38 weeks of part time work. If you work more than that in any one of those years, you’ll be eligible sooner than 10 years.

The reason for those strict requirements is because they don’t want you to fail. If you fail your exam, you’re taking up a place that could have been used by somebody who might have passed it. This is unfair to yourself and to the other candidate. So the strict rules are there to protect every candidate and give them the best chance of passing.

Why You’ll Need to Complete CBAP Training

It has already been mentioned above that you’ll need to complete a minimum of 900 hours of training in addition to 7500 hours of field experience before you can qualify to sit the exam, so you can’t really attempt to earn your certification without doing a course.

The interesting thing is that you don’t necessarily have to complete a CBAP course to qualify, as the requirements don’t explicitly state that. The requirements simply state that whatever your various courses may have been titled, they must align with at least 4 of the 6 knowledge areas of the BABOK, and the minimum hours completed must add up to 900.

Incidentally, it’s worth mentioning that a “hours” in this context refers to credit hours, an academic term that has absolutely no relationship to real physical hours. Credit hours are basically an estimate of the time a typical student would need to spend in order to learn the material sufficiently to obtain at least a pass grade. In IIBA parlance, credit hours are renamed to Professional Development (PD) hours.
